Standard, but good, Asian restaurantEast Garden
I rate this place high because you can order standard meals (in restuarant or take out) or you can do their buffet which is actually quite extensive.
The buffet includes sushi and some other non-standard items that can make it a real bargain if you like those types of dishes.
In terms of meals/take-out the food is pretty much what you would expect... good, but just your typical local asian food restaurant.
Favorite Thai RestaurantThai '99
This is probably one of my most favorite Thai restaurants of all time. I highly recommend the Pad Krapao, Drunken Noodles, and Pad Thai. All the curries are delicious as well.
There is another location on Rt 29, but the dishes are done differently and I prefer the location on the south side. It is smaller, with a better atmosphere, and I think better food.
One complaint, the spring rolls are horrible. They basically wrap up ice berg lettuce.
Popular Pizza DestinationMellow Mushroom
This popular pizza place offers a lot of great pizza creations, as well as pretzel twisters, and a large beer menu.
There can sometimes be a wait, and the service is sometimes stretched, but it is well worth it. There is a large projection screen playing sports events.
I personally recommend the chicken, roasted red-pepper, and artichoke pizza.
Great Seafood and Affordable TooRhett's River Grill & Raw Bar
I like this place because they serve great Raw Oysters... and it is not outrageously expensive.
The bisque is good too, and there are lots of non seafood items on the menu if that isnt your thing.
One complaint, the fried green tomatoes were soggy.
Great Lunch MenuMillmont Grille
I've never had dinner here, but this place has a great lunch menu with entrees, soups, salads, sandwiches, and wraps.
Pretty much something for everyone. It is conveniently located behind Barracks Shopping Center with plenty of parking.
Best Burgers and Hot DogsFive Guys Burgers & Fries
You simply can't get a better burger in Charlottesville.
Although it is a chain, Five Guys is the fastest place with the most options for a great tasting burger. You decide what you want, and get a double or single patty. Definitely recommend the fries - they post where they get the potatoes each day.
If you haven't ever tried them, their hot dogs are great too.
A destination White Spot
You simply have to stop by and have a Gus Burger at least once... preferrably late at night when the owner is trying to handle the ridiculous number of students trying to get food.
Really enjoyed this "experience" and the food hit the spot. The quick service is extremely polite considering the student chaos during late night.
A locals grillRiverside
This is a real locals place with good food. The menu is pretty much 100% grill food, so don't go there expecting something other than hotdogs, hamburgers, etc... but you can tell the food is good just by the sheer number of people there at lunch time each day.
Not Worth the ReputationTip Top Restaurant
I heard great things about Tip Top, especially the breakfast... so it was one of the first places my wife and I went when we moved to Pantops. Unfortunately, we found the food to be below average. Sarah's Pancake House down the street even had better eggs. Typically a place known for breakfast has a "famous" dish, like it hash browns or eggs... but nothing stood out here.
We went back again another time for lunch and were equally dissapointed.
I don't know if I am missing something, but Tip Top doesn't seem to live up to its name.
Great food, Great SettingC&O
The description really says it all... the C&O has been here for as long as I can remember, which says a lot considering how often Cville restaurants turn over. Check out the menu before going as they do not offer a lot of entrees.
The setting is perfect for anniversaries, dates, etc. The bar downstairs is tiny but an interesting place to get a drink.
Definitely a place worth coming back to - especially with the ever changing menu.
